Knoxville Family Photographer Top Tips for Booking Fall Family Photos:
Fall is the most popular time for family photos - The shift to cooler weather, the beautiful foliage, and preparing for Christmas cards and gifts, are all pieces that contribute to this! Fall is my favorite season personally, all my favorite colors are autumnal and I love cozy cool weather.
When Is the Best Time to Book Fall Family Photos in Knoxville, TN?
While the exact timing of leaf change varies from year to year, I have found that foliage predictor tools are incredibly helpful, I found this one that I refer to personally. October and November are the best times (in my personal opinion!) for fall photos. Leaf change is at its finest, and the temps are cooling down!
All my sessions are held an hour before sunset in order to have the best and most flattering light. October sessions start around 6pm or 5:30pm, while November is more typically starting around 4:30pm. (Exact start times are listed under each date on my availability calendar.)
What to wear for fall family photos in Knoxville
You’ll receive a styling guide from me, and detailed personalized styling assistance (I create a moodboard with suggestions from my client closet, as well as online retailers, to provide styling suggestions for the entire family to make your outfit selection experience seamless.)
I love deep reds, caramel, mustard yellow, rust, and warm earthy tones - Always make sure to balance the colors with lots of neutrals like cream, tan, browns, etc., Textures like knits, lace, waffle, etc., add texture and detail that photograph beautifully!
Flowy long dresses are my favorite for mom and girls, (or rompers for little ones that will be held) with Henleys and sweaters being a favorite for boys and dad. Check out this post for links to my favorite places to buy clothes for photo sessions, or take a peek in my client closet.

How to make the most of your fall family photography session
I know that prepping for family photos can feel like a lot, especially with little ones. That’s why I do everything I can to make the experience easy, relaxed, and fun! I will guide you every step along the way. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your session:
- Don’t stress the smiles. I’ll guide you with prompts and gentle games that keep everyone engaged, especially little ones.
- Dress for movement and comfort. Long dresses and textured layers photograph beautifully.
- Pack a few essentials. Water, a non-messy snack (like mini marshmallows or crackers) can make a big difference.
- Arrive early if possible. Giving yourself an extra ten minutes or so to save stress if you run into traffic, or need to change into something from my client closet when you arrive can be really helpful.
- Trust the process. I'll guide you with posing and prompts the whole time, and catching those sweet in-between moments, your only job is to be present and engaged with your family!
Golden hour light changes quickly in the fall, so we’ll be moving through a relaxed but intentional pace to catch that beautiful glow and get your family happily back in the car for an after session snack.
