What is the difference between a birth doula, postpartum doula, and a midwife?

(Feel free to scroll to the next section that has the list if you don't need this information!)

Birth Doulas

A birth doula is not medically licensed or trained, and is specifically hired to provide emotional, physical, and informational support to a mother during labor and deliver. Their entire job is to help mom feel empowered and supported. They will advocate for your preferences in your birth environment of choice, whether at a hospital or at home. They generally offer comfort measures such as coaching in breathing techniques, suggesting position changes, and providing massage, as well as being a constant source of encouragement throughout the labor.

Postpartum Doulas

A postpartum doula does not attend the birth (unless this is included in her services provided that she is both birth and postpartum) her services are postpartum support: Geared toward supporting a mother and her family in the weeks following birth. This can look like helping with newborn care, sometimes overnight, breastfeeding support, light household tasks, and emotional support. This allows the mother the support and time to rest, recover, and bond with her newborn.

Midwives

A midwife is a trained healthcare professional who provides medical care to a woman throughout pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum. Midwives can preform all the prenatal check ups, monitor baby's health, and manage childbirth in low-risk pregnancy situations. They can assist with home births, birth center deliveries, or hospital births. Midwives offer a personal and holistic approach that prioritizes not only the health of mom and baby, but also the personal preferences and choices of the mother. Generally, a midwife is able to spend a lot more time per appointment, and prioritizes understanding where a mom is at emotionally as well as physically.

In Knoxville, we have midwives at UT that are able to deliver at the hospital, and we have a large community of home birth midwives in the area. Formal birth centers are not found in the Knoxville area, but there are several midwives who do have birthing spaces in their offices that you are able to rent if you wish to have that option.

I have a list of local midwives that I am constantly updating too!

Birth and postpartum doulas often charge a nonrefundable retainer to secure their services, which is standard practice. Make sure a signed contract outlines payment terms and any refund conditions. Choosing a certified doula from a respected organization ensures accountability and offers recourse in rare cases of poor business practices.

How to choose a doula?

Every woman has a different personality, background, experience with birth, and way of processing life.

Look through the list, find a few doulas that you feel like you really connect with via their socials or website, make sure they are in your area, and then reach out to a few of them and set up a phone call (or even better, meet up for coffee!) Most doulas are happy to do this, because they understand what a personal thing it is to be invited into your birth space.

Take your time to ask questions, and don't feel bad if you connect with one doula better than another. When you are creating your birth team, you want to make sure that you are choosing someone that is a great fit!

I provide in home newborn photography, and offer packages for maternity + newborn, or first year packages to celebrate milestones along the way. My sessions are family and connection oriented. I don't want you to just see your baby's cute little face, I want you to remember how she smelled, how it felt when she melted into your arms, and how excited your toddler was to meet his baby sister!
